Tree Protection Zone Installation

Matrix Tree Group

Nowadays, construction activities are inevitable. Existing infrastructure, including trees are usually damaged as a part of construction activities. Root severance and soil compaction can lead to tree decline. So, when it is possible to shield trees from construction damage, a Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) must be created during the initial stages of development activities.

WHAT IS A TREE PROTECTION ZONE (TPZ)?

A tree Protection Zone of a tree is an area where construction related activities are restricted or prohibited to prevent injury to preserved trees, particularly during pre-construction and construction.
The intention of TPZ is to:

  • Minimizes disruption to the tree’s growing environment
  • Protects tree roots from excessive traffic and soil disturbance
  • Prevents car damage to the tree branches and trunk
  • Provides roots enough space to sustain a tree’s health

TPZ FENCING

Fencing marks-out the area that requires protection and shows that activities within the fence will be carried differently. In accordance with Toronto city standards, the following TPZ guidelines should be observed to ensure that the tree is well protected:

  • No vehicles, machinery, or persons should enter the TPZ
  • No stockpiling of soil or building materials should be allowed within the TPZ
  • No chemicals or oil dumps should be allowed within the TPZ
  • No open trenching should be done within the TPZ
  • Soil levels within the TPZ should not be altered
  • Trees within the TPZ should not be used to attach temporary services wires, screws, nails, or any fixing device.
